What Ants Am I Seeing Around My Woodbridge Property?
While there are thousands of species of ants in the world, the three most common found infesting in and around Woodbridge are odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants.
Odorous House Ants
Odorous house ants are one of the most common ants known to invade homes in our area in search of food and water sources. Physically, odorous house ants are 1/16 – 1/8 inches long, with brown coloration on their backs and yellowish-brown coloration on their limbs.
As their name suggests, these ants are best known for the foul odor they give off when crushed or threatened, often said to smell like rotting cheese. Unfortunately, that means that, in most cases, you’re only going to identify them when they’ve already become a huge nuisance. After all, who wants to deal with a pungent odor in their home?
Pavement ants are minuscule brown ants, typically measuring no bigger than 1/8 inch in length. They are light brown to black in coloration and can be differentiated from other ants by their 12-segmented antennae – assuming you have the eagle eyes required to see them.
Like odorous house ants, the pavement ant’s name is the best indicator of how to identify it. These ants are most commonly found outside on paved surfaces, usually sidewalks or concrete patios. Due to this behavior, they are most commonly found outdoors: if ants have started invading your outdoor pool parties or barbecues, they are very likely pavement ants.
Carpenter ants are relatively large for ants at roughly 1/2 – 3/4 inch in length. They are identified by their black coloration and their large heads, capped off with two intimidating pincers. However, unlike other ants, in most situations, you’re less likely to see the ants themselves and more likely to see the destruction they leave behind.
While any ant presence can be a nuisance, most of the time they are nothing more than that. Carpenter ants are in a category of their own, causing intensive structural damage to the wooden areas of your home. Since this can correlate to the walls, floors, and foundations, this means that they’re not only generally destructive but that they are destructive to some of the most vital areas of your home.
